Air filtration systems, also known as air purifiers, help keep your home environment healthy. By filtering the air you breathe, you reduce the risk of pollutants entering your body, which also eases the symptoms of asthma and allergies. If you’re curious about having an air filtration system installed, ask an HVAC contractor to inspect your heating and cooling system and determine what kind of filtration system is a good fit for your home. Here’s a guide to help air filtration systems and how they work.

What’s an Air Filtration system?

Air filtration systems are mechanical devices which use filters of fibrous or porous materials to remove particulates from the air supply. They remove mold, dust, pollen, dust mites, and other pollutants. HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorption) filters can be 99% efficient, and they capture pollutants as small as .03 microns. Normal furnace filters may remove only 10% of contaminants from the air. If you’re curious about your current filtration system or would like to install one, contact an HVAC contractor to take a look at your current HVAC system.

How Does an Air-Filtration System Work?

hvac-contractorAn air-filtration system uses fans to pull air from outside, and through a series of filters in your home. Once the air passes through the filters and unwanted particles are captured, the air is released into your home. This process takes place throughout the day. The filter housing is located between the air return duct and the furnace. The filter cartridge slides into this housing. Some homes have other filters located at each vent to catch particles which may have bypassed the initial filter. For air-filtration systems to be effective, they must run at all times. You can keep the system running 24 hours by changing the thermostat setting for the fan from “auto” to “on.”

Since the air coming out of your HVAC system eventually passes through your air filtration system, you can improve the quality of your home’s air even further by ensuring your ducts are in good condition. Have an HVAC contractor inspect your ductwork for holes or cracks to make sure dust and dirt aren’t infiltrating your air supply.
