Unless rotten eggs are lingering in the refrigerator or trash, any sulphuric smells floating around your home are likely caused by sewer gas. Although you won’t know for sure until a professional examines your property, these odors are usually attributed to problems with your drains. To learn why you may need drain service, here’s a basic overview.

A Short Guide on Sewer Gas

What Is Sewer Gas?

Made up of a variety of toxic and nontoxic gases, sewer gas is a natural byproduct of decaying waste. The exact gas composition varies depending on the type of waste, but hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, and nitrogen are usually among the list. When your home is regularly maintained, sewer gas will properly vent out without entering into the building. However, there are two common sources where it can become a problem: the drain trap and the roof vents.

Drain Trap

drain serviceAlso known as a p-trap, a drain trap has a curved design to prevent sewage and sewer gas from coming back up. As the water flows through, a small amount collects at the bottom of the curve and forms a seal that traps the sewer gas down the pipe. However, if the drain dries up, there’s no seal to keep the gas away. If you have any unused sinks, tubs, or toilets in your home, try running the water for a while or flushing the bowl a few times. If that doesn’t work, you may need drain service; the pipe may be damaged or clogged.

Roof Vents

The vents on the roof are directly related to your plumbing drains. They help alleviate the pressure that builds up from the sewer gas and draws it away from the house. If the vents are improperly installed, blocked, or damaged, the sewer gas can leak into your home instead of exiting it.

Risks

Although some nontoxic gases partially comprise sewer gas, overexposure is dangerous. Hydrogen sulfide, which is the primary source for the rotten egg smell, is particularly deadly. Headaches, dizziness, irritation of the eyes and respiratory system are some of the side effects of either exposure to a high concentration or prolonged exposure. However, keep in mind that if you’ve only recently noticed the smell, it’s likely at a very low level. Schedule drain service ASAP and avoid any long-term health risks.
