Mold on your roofing should be addressed at once to avoid it spreading into the interior of your home where it can pose a risk to your health and damage your property. Luckily, preventive maintenance can keep the fungus from growing in the first place.

4 Tips to Keep Mold off of Your Roof

1. Remove Excess Organic Material

Piles of leaves and branches on your roof are breeding grounds for mold. While commercial roof cleaning products are available, the simplest cleaning methods are those you have around your home. Use your water hose to spray the roof from the ground, or utilize a leaf blower to gently blow away debris.

2. Pay Attention to Your Gutters

Your gutters divert excess water off your roof and away from your home; however, when clogged, the accumulated debris and rainwater will invite mold growth. Clean your gutters regularly by hand or use a hose attachment designed to force debris out of the gutter. Also, check that the gutters drain away from your home to avoid standing water.

3. Trim Your Trees

4. Install Mold-Fighting Material

Copper and zinc naturally inhibit mold growth. If your roofing contractor installs strips of these metals underneath your shingles, their effects will spread across the roof when it rains, providing wide-reaching protection.
