After hip replacement surgery, it’s normal to feel some pain. Your doctor will prescribe medication and a care routine to help you manage swelling and any related symptoms. There are other steps you can take to restore your range of motion and relieve pain. To help you recover after this procedure, here are a few ways to find relief when you need it.

How to Relieve Pain After a Hip Replacement

1. Take Medication as Prescribed

Medication will help soothe any pain you might feel on the road to recovery. After determining your sensitivity to meds and how they might interact with other prescriptions you take, your doctor will likely prescribe an opioid such as tramadol or oxycodone to manage your symptoms. To help with any swelling, you can take ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

2. Apply Ice Packs

When the discomfort is minor, you can ditch the drugs and use an ice pack instead. Purchase multiple gel packs that cool in the freezer to place over the area. Switch to a new one regularly to ensure the area is cold enough to ease inflammation. While icing, keep your legs elevated to reduce swelling, pain, and the chance of blood clots.

hip replacement3. Start Physical Therapy

Soon after completing hip replacement surgery, you'll need to start rehabilitation or physical therapy. This will strengthen the area and rebuild stamina and balance to help you get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible. If you had surgery because of arthritis, it is likely the muscles surrounding the joint are weak and move abnormally. A physical therapist will work to restore your regular movement and gait to help with walking up stairs, driving, and other activities.
