Mold grows on windows for several reasons, including exposure to moist plants, condensation, and rain infiltration. If you’ve found mold on ones in your home, take some steps to remove it to prevent it from recurring. There are also some instances in which damage is the source of the problem and you’ll need to replace your fixture to prevent it from happening again. To help you deal with this issue, here’s a guide to some of the steps to take.

How to Address Mold on Your Windows

Determining the Source

windowsBefore you plan your course of action, discover why the mold is occurring to prevent future trouble. Bacteria and moisture from a houseplant’s soil can come into contact with a nearby window, causing mold to develop. The issue can also stem from cracks on the frame that allow rain to infiltrate the seal, or excess humidity from a bathroom.

Preventing Recurrences

Mold will spread if it isn’t removed, irritating people’s respiratory systems. You may hire a company to remove the colony or clean it off yourself by scrubbing a mixture of one-half bleach and one-half water over the area. If you’re performing the work, don’t forget to use gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling spores.

Once the marks are gone, work toward resolving its cause. Reduce the humidity of the room with dehumidifiers or fans for ventilation, move houseplants away from the windowsill, and replace weathered seals to reduce drafts. Routinely inspect each window in your home to make sure the mold hasn’t returned, and continue to clear away any that you find until it stops reappearing.

Replacing Damaged Frames

If the mold continues to reappear despite your best efforts, your windows are probably damaged. There could be cracks that are letting in outside moisture. Sometimes spores will also sneak inside the frame, thriving under the radar. Replacements are available in fiberglass, vinyl, and other composites that feature new seals that prevent exposure to moisture.
