There are a variety of health risks that are more common in men. Being aware of these issues will help you be proactive with your health care and prevent problems from developing or worsening. Below are a few common health concerns men should be aware of.

Common Health Risks in Men

1. Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but over half of all heart-disease-related deaths each year are men. Make heart health a priority by engaging in regular exercise for at least 30 minutes a day; cutting back or eliminating unhealthy fats and alcohol from your diet; and quitting smoking. Have your cholesterol checked regularly by a health care professional, and, if necessary, take cholesterol-lowering medication.

2. Alcoholism

health careMen are twice as likely to turn into alcoholics. This risk is even greater for male college students, adult survivors of childhood abuse, and those with pre-existing mental illnesses. If you drink, be mindful of how much you consume. If you need to drink to function, feel better, or socialize, alcohol may be a problem for you. Aim to cut back or quit entirely; however, if doing so is an issue, don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for help from a health care professional. 12-step programs, support groups, and individual psychotherapy will all be helpful in addressing a drinking problem.

3. Depression

While depression in women is more common, it also poses a significant health risk for men. Men aren’t as likely to call a friend or family member for help, and they are more likely to die by suicide. Symptoms of depression include a pervasive sadness; withdrawal from daily life or social activities; changes to sleep and appetite; and persistent thoughts of hopelessness, despair, anxiety, or self-harm. If you notice any of these symptoms, let your health care provider know. In addition to daily exercise, healthy eating habits, and a strong social support system, solutions like therapy and medication can help restore your mood.
