About 64.7 million American adults have periodontal—or gum—disease to some extent. If left untreated, it can lead to painful or bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, tooth loss, and even loss of tissue and bone in the mouth. Gum disease is also linked to health problems, including strokes, heart disease, and heart attacks. To keep the gums healthy, follow these three tips suggested by dentists.

How to Maintain Healthy Gums

1. Brush & Floss Regularly

Routine brushing and flossing are crucial to gum health. Brush at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and before bed. Brush for a minimum of two minutes, devoting at least 30 seconds of mindful brushing to each of the four quadrants of the mouth. Flossing is just as important as brushing. Always floss before bed, and guide the floss between the teeth gently, running the thread along the sides of each tooth and along the gumline.

2. Rinse With a Therapeutic Mouthwash

dentistAfter brushing, and, ideally, after meals and snacks, rinse the mouth with a therapeutic mouthwash. While some mouthwashes only have a minty taste that masks bad breath, therapeutic mouthwashes contain ingredients that kill bacteria and strengthen the gums and teeth. Choose a product with the American Dental Association’s seal of approval or consult your dentist for a mouthwash recommendation; these rinses will typically contain bacteria-fighting ingredients and gum-healthy minerals like fluoride or zinc.

3. Watch Your Diet

Sugary foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy can wreak havoc on the gums, so keep these sweet treats to a minimum. Incorporate more gum-friendly foods into your diet. Leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits are both filled with vitamin C, which increases the production of red blood cells that fight against gum disease and reduce its inflammatory effects. Foods with a crunchier consistency, like apples, carrots, and celery, can scrape away bits of food and plaque that get caught on the gums and teeth.
