It’s that time of year again, school is almost out and the kiddos will be off and running on their summer breaks. Summertime can really do a number on their teeth though. All those icy snacks, sports drinks, soda and candy - whether they are away at camp or having a pool-side snack, there are healthier ways to cool down and still have fun. Dr. Joy Lunan, a Middlebury, CT dentist, shares her summertime snack tips.

Popsicles   Instead of those sugar-laden store bought kind, try making your own with fresh fruit and yogurt. Dairy actually helps to prevent cavities. Just gather your favorite fruit and some yogurt, blend together in a blender, and place into ice pop molds to stick in your freezer. Try out different recipes, or have a contest with the kids to see who makes the best flavor.

Ice Cream   Everyone loves a good old fashioned ice cream cone, especially on a hot summer day. Just enjoy them in moderation. The sugar found in traditional ice cream likes to stick to our teeth and break down the enamel. And we all know when we are out and about we aren’t going to be brushing our teeth right away! A better aternative is cold fresh fruit, fruit salad or even frozen fresh fruit.

Sports Beverages   Carbonated, sugary soda and sports drinks should be avoided whenever possible. Tooth decay and obesity are just a couple things that can be caused by these summer drinks. If it’s the carbonation you crave, try flavored seltzer water. But, water will always be the best option. There is no replacement.

Candy    We all know that candy isn’t the best thing for our teeth, leading to cavities. Sticky things like protein bars, dried fruit mix and granola bars are hard on our teeth as well. These types of sticky foods can get stuck in our teeth, allowing bacteria to start creating cavities. If you must have these kinds of snacks this summer, try to eat it all in one sitting and drink some water afterwards to rinse off the teeth. Fruit or sugar-free gum are also great options here as well.
