Like any self-service facility, laundromats have a special code of conduct that ensures everyone can get their laundry done efficiently. While most of these rules are unwritten, it’s a good idea to follow them out of politeness to other patrons. Here are five important points of courtesy to remember whenever you utilize coin laundry services.

The Rules of Proper Laundromat Etiquette

1. Don’t Claim Machines

When you spot the only open dryer while your clothes are still in the wash cycle, it might be tempting to reserve it with your laundry basket. This is a big laundromat faux pas. Proper etiquette states that you must wait until your clothes are ready to use a dryer, particularly if someone else needs it before you do.

2. Wait Before Moving Someone’s Load

A load in the washer or dryer is finished, and the owner is nowhere in sight. Wait at least five minutes for their return. If they still haven’t arrived, carefully remove their clothes and place them neatly on top of the machine.

3. Avoid Overloading the Machine

To avoid doing multiple laundromatloads, some patrons may stuff a single machine over its capacity. This puts a strain on washers and dryers that can lead to a breakdown, resulting in one less available machine until it can be fixed. Similarly, overfilling machines with detergent, bleach, and fabric softener can damage them and affect the next patron’s load of laundry. Check the labels to determine the correct amount of product to use.

4. Set a Timer If You’re Leaving

While waiting for your load to finish, you might take the opportunity to run a few errands. Always set a timer when you leave. You don’t want your finished clothes sitting in the machine while others are waiting, so be sure to return promptly.

5. Clean Out the Lint Screen

Leaving lint in a dryer’s collection tray can decrease the efficiency of the machine and potentially become a fire hazard. To ensure the safety of other patrons, be sure to clear off the lint screen after using the dryer. In general, it’s courteous to leave your space as clean as it was when you arrived.
