As a commercial trucker, you likely understand the necessity of liability insurance. But what type of coverage is needed to ensure the most comprehensive policy? The following guide highlights a few of the options all professionals should consider.

What Kinds of Liability Insurance Coverage Do Commercial Truckers Need?

1. Commercial Auto Liability Insurance

Commercial auto liability insurance is the most fundamental type of coverage for truckers, as it is required by the federal and state government; without it, you will not be able to get your public filing from the Public Utilities Commission. This coverage offers protection to both you and the trucking company if an accident occurs that you are liable for, while in transit. Although it is a must for all drivers, every trucker’s policy will differ slightly, as the amount of coverage needed depends on the state and federal requirements of where you are operating and what is being hauled.

2. Motor Truck Cargo Coverage

Because commercial auto coverage does not cover property of others in transit from theft or damage caused by an accident, this policy is crucial. If the items being transported are considered hazardous material, many risk managers will require a transportation pollution liability insurance policy (TPL).  It covers insureds who need protection for pollution conditions (spill clean-up, bodily injury, defense) caused during transportation. This coverage can also include loading/unloading should the insured’s cargo create a pollution condition.

3. General Liability Insurance Coverage

A general liability policy can provide coverage if you are found liable for bodily injury or property damage that occurs while outside of your truck. For example, if you accidentally caused damage to a client’s building or other personal property. Or in another example, if you were to accidentally damage the hauled items in an attempt to help carry them inside a client’s building; in this case, since you were outside your truck when the damage occurred, you would not be protected by the commercial auto liability or cargo coverage.
