There’s nothing quite like the fun and excitement of driving an ATV. For legal and safety reasons, however, that experience has to be kept to appropriate trails and paths. Thankfully, transporting your vehicle to and from the riding area isn’t as cumbersome as it might seem with the help of a quality equipment trailer. By keeping a few tips in mind, you’ll be able to quickly and safely tow your ATV whenever you feel the need to rev that throttle.

3 Tips for Towing ATVs

1. Use an Appropriate Equipment Trailer

Not all trailers are made to tow vehicles such as ATVs. If you’re planning on towing a single one, a 5x8 steel or aluminum open trailer is a good choice. It will be sturdy enough to carry the load, but light enough to be pulled by smaller pickups and SUVs. With the addition of a rear ramp, loading and unloading your vehicle will be quick and simple so you can get to riding as soon as possible.

2. Safely Load the ATV

Drive the ATV up and onto the trailer slowly with the four-wheel-drive engaged if possible. Once the ATV is on the equipment trailer, follow the 60/40 weight rule. 60% of the ATV’s weight should be positioned toward the front of the trailer (closest to your pickup or SUV).

3. Secure the ATV

Properly securing the ATV to the trailer is one of the most important aspects of towing the vehicle. Use straps rated at a minimum of 2,000 pounds complete with adjustable ratchets so the vehicle can be tightly held in place. When secured, the ATV should only move with the trailer itself, not slide or slip around.
