One of the most important things you can do for your child's health is to provide good dental care. This should include visits to a pediatric dentist, as well as practicing good dental hygiene at home. To maximize the effectiveness of your oral hygiene routine, your child should always use fluoride toothpaste.

The Benefits of Fluoride

Tooth enamel contains minerals that help keep it hard, strong, and white. As bacteria grow in the mouth, they leach minerals from the teeth. As a result, those minerals have to be replaced. Most if these minerals, such as calcium, come naturally from a balanced diet. However, fluoride isn't plentiful in most food. Instead, you need to make sure your children's teeth receive a daily dose of the mineral from your toothpaste.

Safe Fluoride Use

Pediatric-DentistSwallowing too much fluoride is bad for your child's health, so it's important to keep an eye on them while they brush and encourage them to spit out their toothpaste. Use only a small amount of toothpaste each time your child brushes; most pediatric dentists recommend a portion the size of a pea. Make sure your child brushes thoroughly, exposing all the surfaces of their tooth enamel to the fluoride; once they’ve finished, have them spit out the rest. If your child doesn't like to brush, encourage them to try by letting them choose a toothpaste they like — such as one with sparkles or with their favorite character on the tube.
