For most drivers, fuel economy is a major concern. It can be expensive, and a gas-guzzling vehicle can be a blow to your budget. Fortunately, with proper car care and driving habits, you can improve fuel efficiency. Here are five common causes of decreased fuel economy.

5 Car Care Problems That Impact Gas Mileage

1. Excess Weight

When a car has too much weight to carry, it has to work harder to go. If the cargo rack on top of the vehicle is full, for instance, this lowers the vehicle’s wind resistance, resulting in an aerodynamic drag that stresses the engine and uses more fuel. Overloaded trunks and tow loads are similarly problematic. Take anything you don’t need out of the cargo to prevent this issue.

2. Infrequent Oil Changes

Only use the motor oil recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. The proper oil should lubricate the moving parts of the engine for a smooth operation. One that’s not right for your engine, or that’s dirty, will put extra stress on the engine and lower gas mileage. Refer to the owner’s manual for the recommended oil type and changing schedule.

3. Bad Spark Plugs

carcareSpark plugs provide the spark the engine needs to ignite and combust. These should be replaced every 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Old, worn plugs create a wider gap, resulting in a loss of power and more stress on the engine. The car will use more fuel to accommodate it.

4. Incorrect Tire Pressure

When the tires aren’t properly inflated, the car has to work harder to move. This means the car uses more fuel to travel the same distance. Driving with low tire pressure also increases the risk of a blowout, which could be dangerous. Check the tire pressure with a manual gauge and refer to your owner’s manual or tire sidewall for the recommended pounds per square inch of pressure, or psi.

5. Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving, including quick stops and starts, speeding, and revving the engine are aggressive driving habits that can reduce fuel economy. Frequent driving in stop-and-go traffic also affects the engine as it can’t operate at full capacity, resulting in inefficiency. Try to avoid areas or times of day prone to congestion and coast whenever possible.
