Whether you’ve just moved in and want to personalize your bathroom or are tired of staring at stained grout, installing new tile can transform the space where you get ready for your day. Best of all, bathroom tile installation is a reasonable project for DIY enthusiasts. If you’re hoping to tackle this flooring overhaul on your own, use the following guide to get started.

How to Install New Bathroom Tile

1. Install Underlayment

Before getting your hands dirty, carefully measure and record the dimensions of the bathroom, so you know exactly the amount of supplies to get, as well as where there should be cutouts for the toilet and sink. After purchasing a cement board, known as the underlayment, and laying it over the entire length of the floor, you’ll attach it with a drill and screws, each spaced about six inches from one another.

2. Plan the Tile Design

Next, you’ll need to decide what look you’re going for. Some homeowners like to use a checkerboard pattern with two different tile colors or install a trim of smaller tiles around the main, larger ones. Lay the tiles on the floor to get a sense of the finished project, making sure to use tile spacers to represent where the grout will go. While you may need to cut some tiles to fit odd corners, save time by purchasing pre-cut tiles from a flooring provider. Once the layout is confirmed, take several photos before removing the tiles.

3. Install the Tile

Include the spacers as you lay down your design. Then wait 24 hours after the final tile has been placed. After this period, take the spacers out and use a grout float to fill the gaps between the bathroom tiles. Wet and wring out a sponge; then use it to clear away the leftover grout and even out the existing lines. After 24 hours, apply a sealant to protect the grout from discoloration.
