A standard air conditioner consists of an indoor evaporator and an outdoor condenser that are connected by refrigerant lines. While the inside part is generally low maintenance and only requires an annual cleaning, the outside unit must contend with the elements, and thus, demands more upkeep. Here are a few care tips you can follow to ensure your system continues to run smoothly.

How to Take Care of Your Air Conditioner's Outside Unit

1. Maintain Two-Feet of Clearance Space

When plants and other obstructions are placed too close to the condenser unit, it blocks airflow. This causes the system to overwork itself trying to cycle the refrigerant and will lead to a shortened life span. Avoid this by installing the unit at least two feet from any walls and cutting away any shrubbery that might be growing too close.

2. Keep Immediate Area Free of Debris

Cut back any nearby trees or place an awning over the system to prevent debris from falling onto it and clogging its parts. Also, when mowing grass, take care to direct the clippings away from the system and immediately clean up any that could later blow into it. Additionally, at least once a season, visually inspect the unit and sweep or vacuum away any dust and dirt.

3. Clean Gutters

Gutter overflow is another common way debris makes it onto outdoor air conditioning units. Make it a priority to clean your gutters at least twice a year to keep them from being overrun with leaves and other clutter that can spill onto the condenser below. If your home is surrounded by a lot of trees, inspect them at least once a month to prevent the problem from getting ahead of you.
