As June arrives in North Carolina, one thing is for sure: The temperatures will rise, pushing 90 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Other than the heat, however, Southern summers can be unpredictable. One year could see plenty of rain while another could result in a drought. Find out how R & T Lawn Services can help you prepare for whatever lawn care hurdles June may bring.

Potential Lawn Care Issues to Watch Out for This June

Brown Patch

When combined with seasonal rains and humidity, hot weather allows your lawn to retain moisture at night. Water sits on the grass blades instead of evaporating. This increases the risk of “brown patch” fungus. Regular application of fungicide every 21 days protects your lawn.

Mosquitoes

lawn careExcessive moisture also encourages mosquitoes to breed as these pesky critters rely on damp environments to lay their eggs. Not only do they ruin nights sitting outside with their itchy bites, they also carry diseases like West Nile virus. One of the biggest things you can do around your home, is make sure the mosquitoes don't have a place to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes need water for two stages of their life cycle, so it's important to monitor standing water sources. In addition, have your shrubbery sprayed with mosquito control repellent to stay safe.  Contact us to add the mosquito control treatment to your plan today!

Drought

On the other end of the lawn care spectrum, if there isn’t enough rain in June, your lawn may suffer from extreme dryness. When rainfall is lacking, make sure to water—ideally in the early morning before the sun rises. This allows moisture to penetrate the soil and reach roots instead of evaporating off the surface. Usually, 1 inch of water per week is sufficient, although requirements can vary depending on the type of soil and grass.
