It's no secret that teething can be an uncomfortable experience for an infant. The process can start as early as two months old, though the first tooth usually doesn't emerge until around six months. With their first dentist visit still months away, you'll want to take some steps to make your baby as comfortable as possible during the teething process.

Signs

First, be aware of some of the common signs that teething has started. One of the earliest is an increase in biting movements; an infant may try to bite at their toys or fingers as a way of alleviating some of the pressure in their gums. Their sore mouth and gums can also cause them to lose their appetite, have difficulty sleeping, and trigger a general sense of fussiness and irritability. Another telltale sign of teething is an increase in drooling, which may cause a slight rash to develop around the mouth.

Solutions

dentistDentists recommend a variety of treatments to ease baby's teething pain. A cold washcloth or teething ring can work wonders on an infant's sore gums. Babies may also find relief with a gentle massage; using your clean fingertip, apply light pressure to the gums. Distraction can go a long way in managing symptoms, too; keep plenty of books, games, and funny faces handy to keep the baby's mind focused on more pleasant things. Also, have a ready supply of bibs and cleaning cloths as teething babies will drool to excess.

In most cases, teething discomfort can be treated successfully at home. But if there are other distressing symptoms present with teething, such as a fever or extreme pain levels, contact a doctor or dentist for a more customized treatment plan.
