After wisdom teeth extraction, a blood clot forms over the removal site to encourage healing and protect the sensitive nerves, tissue, and bone. When this blood clot does not develop properly or becomes dislodged, it leaves the site vulnerable to bacterial infection, resulting in a condition known as dry socket. Here’s what you should know about this potential complication.

How to Minimize the Risk of Dry Socket After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Risk Factors

There are certain behaviors that increase the chances of developing dry socket. Smoking and chewing tobacco can contaminate the incision, and the physical act of smoking, which requires a sucking motion, can put pressure on the blood clot and dislodge it; using a straw can have this same effect. If you take oral contraceptives, the higher levels of estrogen placed into the bloodstream can hinder healing after wisdom teeth extraction. Previous instances of dry socket might also make you prone to recurrences in the future.

Prevention

Don't smoke, chew tobacco, or use a straw for the first several days after the extraction. If you take oral contraceptives or other medications that affect blood clotting, consult both your dentist and primary care doctor to see if these drugs can be discontinued until after making a full recovery.

When to See a Dentist

Though some discomfort is to be expected post-extraction, the pain should get better as time goes on. If you're still experiencing significant pain days after the procedure, visit your dentist. Dry socket pain often starts at the extraction location and radiates out to the rest of the head and neck. You might also be able to see dry socket as a visibly empty indentation at the incision site; the bone may also be visible.
