For your child, one of the most exciting parts of losing a tooth is receiving a visit from the Tooth Fairy. However, unbeknownst to them, you’ll be assuming the persona of this beloved character who plays an important role in their dental care. Below are four tips to help you successfully act as the Tooth Fairy.

How to Be a First-Time Tooth Fairy

1. If You're Buying Gifts, Stock Up

Some parents choose to give small gifts instead of cash. If you go this route, stock up so you have a ready supply. Kids have 20 baby teeth, and they will lose them all until they’re about 12 years old. A cache of gifts eliminates any last-minute scrambling for presents later on.

2. Prepare a Special Spot to Place the Tooth

The tradition that children need to put their lost teeth underneath their pillow is simply a suggestion and not a practical one. Sneaking a tooth out from under a child's pillow raises the risk of them waking up and catching you playing Tooth Fairy. Instead, have your child choose a designated spot to place a missing tooth, like on a bedside table or dresser. Get a special container, like a small pouch or box, to store the tooth until pickup.

3. Have a Backup Plan for Lost Teeth

4. Remind Yourself of Tooth Fairy Visits

Amid busy schedules, it can be easy to forget that a child has lost a tooth. But your child won't forget this pivotal moment. Whenever a tooth is lost, input a Tooth Fairy visit into your smartphone calendar with an alert at the appropriate time.

Along with the Tooth Fairy, a dentist will be an important ally in your child's dental care practices. Bring your child to Pediatric Dental Group, serving the children of Honolulu, HI, since 1966. They offer comprehensive dental care in a safe and welcoming environment, including preventative treatments, restorations, and orthodontics. Call (808) 593-8828 or visit them online to make an appointment.
