If you’ve been to any cheerleading event or even seen a performance online recently, you may have noticed that the sport has evolved significantly over the years. A major component of this change has been the infusion of tumbling into the sport. If your child is interested in cheerleading, having a background in tumbling or gymnastics can help. Learn more about the links between tumbling and cheerleading below.

How Tumbling Translates to Cheerleading

What is Tumbling?

Tumbling is a gymnastics discipline in which participants perform floor moves such as flips, tucks, handsprings, and somersaults. Also sometimes referred to as floor gymnastics, the practice is sometimes practiced on a trampoline or 25-meter spring track. It’s similar to traditional gymnastics in that it requires balance, stamina, and flexibility, but it does not typically involve the use of props such as balance beams.

Gymnastics is an effective way to ease into tumbling, as it helps participants build strength and balance before moving onto more dynamic, fast-paced movements.

How is it Used in Cheerleading?

tumblingIn competitive cheerleading, athletes are often expected to have basic tumbling skills. Moves such as handsprings, tucks, and flips are commonly incorporated into cheer routines, especially as participants advance through different competitive levels and age groups.

Having a solid foundation in either floor or traditional gymnastics can be helpful in propelling a cheerleader through their sport. Even beginner-level gymnastics moves such as backbends and cartwheels may be helpful in paving a path for more advanced combinations and routines. Floor gymnastics can also build important skills in prospective or existing cheerleaders, such as endurance, balance, flexibility, and coordination.
