Teaching children about oral health and wellness will help impart good dental habits early in life. The subject of cavities, however, can be a complicated one for kids to grasp. Their confusion might only be compounded — and mixed with anxiety — if they have a cavity that needs to be filled at the dentist. To help clarify this subject for kids, below are some tips to explain cavities in easily understood terms.

How to Explain Cavities to Kids

1. Discuss the Causes

First, a child needs to understand what causes cavities. Talk to them about sugar — it makes sweet treats taste good, but too much can create tiny bad spots in teeth. These spots are cavities, and they can make the mouth hurt and make it difficult to eat and chew. Stress the importance of regular brushing to remove sugars from the teeth and prevent cavities.

2. Talk About What Happens When a Cavity Is Filled

If your child has a cavity, tell them what happens when the dentist fills it. Use age-appropriate terms and keep things general but informative. Explain how they’ll receive medicine to numb their mouth before the dentist uses a special tool to remove the sick part of the tooth. Finally, the entire hole in the tooth will be filled with a material that protects it and makes it feel good again.

3. Present the Dentist as a Frienddentist

It's natural for kids to feel hesitation about new experiences and people. As soon as you start discussing teeth-brushing with your kids, introduce them to the idea of the dentist. Let them know early on that the dentist is a friend — someone who helps them make teeth feel and look their best. This way, your child will have less trepidation about visiting later.
