A first trip to the dentist will be a new experience for your child, and it's one that can be filled with considerable trepidation. Much of a child's dental-related anxiety stems from a fear of the unknown; they don't know what to expect, and there are plenty of intimidating new sights and sounds waiting at the dentist's office. Fortunately, you can take a few steps to prepare your child for what's ahead.

How to Prepare Your Child for the Dentist

1. Talk About the Visit

Using age-appropriate language, tell your child what the visit to the dentist will entail. Present the dentist as a friend, an ally in helping your child take care of their teeth. Discuss some of the different equipment they'll encounter during the exam, like the tiny handheld mirror, the high-powered tooth polisher, and the X-ray machine that takes pictures of their teeth. You could even roleplay what the visit might be like. Also, welcome your child's questions and provide honest answers.

2. Bring a Comfort From Home

A small item from home can be calming and reassuring for a child at the dentist. Have your child pick out a stuffed animal, a small blanket, or a favorite toy to bring with them. These items can also help distract a child during the more uncomfortable parts of the visit.

3. Read Books

dentistThere are many children's books that tackle the subject of dentist visits. In the days leading up to your child's appointment, read them these stories. This can also encourage conversation and questions, which will only further demystify the experience that awaits.
