Every household with a septic tank depends on its septic system to keep everyone safe, healthy, and comfortable. However, it's easy to overlook septic tank maintenance until a serious issue presents itself. Many septic issues stem from the use of certain household products. Learning about these common causes of septic malfunction can help you save money on sudden repairs while also extending the life of your tank.

Chemical Clog Removers

Chemical clog-removing liquids are often touted as fast, easy, convenient ways to remedy clogged drains without the need for expensive or time-consuming repairs. Unfortunately, most of these products are unsafe for your septic tank. First, they’re comprised of extremely corrosive chemicals that can eat away at your pipes. Second, they kill the bacteria that feed on the waste in your septic tank. These bacteria are necessary to create a proper ecosystem within the tank so that waste can be broken down. Instead of using clog-removing chemicals, use a drain snake or an old-fashioned flange plunger. If these solutions don’t do the trick, contact a septic service professional.

Soaps & Detergents

septic-tankThe delicate ecosystem in your septic tank can also be endangered by overuse of household soaps and detergents. Phosphorus is a common ingredient in many detergents because it has superior stain-fighting capabilities. However, it can also kill bacteria in your septic tank.

Antibacterial soaps do the same thing. Over time, these products will deplete necessary septic bacteria, encourage algae growth, and cause wear and tear on the whole system. Try to use a minimal amount of soap and detergent, and only run the washing machine or dishwasher when you have a full load. Choose traditional mild hand and body soaps, and wash with phosphate-free detergents.
