Summer is the time of year when most people look forward to days at the beach, outdoor barbecues, and lounging by the pool. But the sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage the skin in just 15 minutes. For this reason, it’s crucial to protect your skin during the warmer months. Below are three dermatologist-approved tips for summer skin protection.

How to Protect Your Skin During the Summer

1. Apply Sunscreen

Whenever you're outdoors, wear sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend an SPF of at least 30; this strength can block 97% of the sun's UVA and UVB rays. If you're swimming, reapply sunscreen every two hours. Be aware that the sun can also cause damage on cloudy days and days with cooler temperatures, so sunscreen is still important.

2. Wear Protective Gear

dermatologistA hat can protect the skin from the effects of the sun. Choose a hat with a wide, all-around brim. If you prefer a baseball cap, you'll still need to apply sunscreen to the neck, ears, and sides of the face. Wear sunglasses to protect the delicate skin underneath your eyes.

3. Avoid Peak Sun Exposure Times

The sun shines most powerfully between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., making the likelihood of sunburn higher during this timeframe. Seek out a shady spot until the intensity has waned. If you must be outdoors during this time, make sure to cover your face with sunscreen. Carry a small bottle with you to reapply it throughout the day.
