The average motorcycle tire can last up to five years from the manufacturing date. However, other factors — such as where you ride — can shorten the expected life span. Whether your bike’s tires are approaching that age or not, you should regularly inspect them to stay safe this riding season. If you spot any of the following signs, bring it to a professional for a change.

How to Tell You Need New Motorcycle Tires

1. Punctures

Whether due to a nail or another sharp object, punctured rubber can’t handle the stress of turns and bumps during normal riding, leading to an increased chance of a blowout. It’s particularly dangerous in the front tire because the rider can’t maintain control of the bike if a blowout occurs. Even if the object stays embedded in the tire, it could fall out while riding and let air escape. While a plug may temporarily fix a puncture, it is not recommended because it could fail as the tire flexes. A puncture in the sidewall always necessitates immediate replacement because this area doesn’t provide enough support for a plug.

2. Low Tread

motorcycle tiresTreads help a tire shed water and maintain traction with the road. The rubber will wear out with normal use over time, reducing grip and making a ride more dangerous, especially on wet roads. Most motorcycle tires come with an indicator that shows when the tread reaches about 1/32nd of an inch. If the tires don’t have this indicator, use the penny test. Place the penny upside down into the grooves of the tire. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered by the rubber, the tread is still thick enough; if you see the full head, replace the tire as soon as possible.

3. Bulges

If a tire bubbles up or bulges out, it indicates damage to the exterior. It means the rubber can’t handle the interior air pressure due to a cut, puncture, or low tread, causing it to bulge outward. Replace the tire immediately if you see a bulge, and do not ride on it as it presents a serious risk for a blowout.
