One of the best parts of the summer is having the opportunity to take your ATV out for a ride and enjoy the beautiful weather, and this activity is made much simpler if you have the right equipment trailer. For enthusiasts who go riding often, it makes more financial sense to buy your own, but finding the right fit can be confusing. Before making any purchase, consider the following factors.

Factors to Consider When Buying an Equipment Trailer

1. Size

At a minimum, you’ll need a utility trailer that is at least 4 x 6 feet to fit the ATV, but it’ll be snug. Going with a 5 x 8 foot single trailer axle option gives more space and makes it easier to get the ATV properly positioned when towing. However, it’s also important to consider a larger equipment trailer for additional storage. Often, you will be towing friends’ vehicles as well as other supplies, and the extra space makes it much simpler.

2. Material

The two most common types of trailers are made from aluminum and steel. Steel tends to be the less expensive option and is highly durable, especially for off road use.

3. Weight Load

Equipment TrailersDifferent equipment trailers have various gross vehicle weight ratings, which dictates the maximum load it’s able to safely carry without damaging the trailer itself or the trailer hitch. It’s recommended that you buy an option that can handle the expected overall load plus 1000 pounds.  You never want to maximize your load every time you tow the trailer.  This weakens springs and axles over time.

4. Loading Option

When towing an ATV, all the vehicles should be stored sideways. Because of this, it’s important to consider the loading options of the trailer. Most can only be loaded from the back, which means you’ll have to manually turn the ATV once it’s on there. An easier method is to go with an option that also has side loading capabilities.

5. Tires

Smaller trailers tend to have smaller tires, and while this is fine for driving on the road, it’s not the best option when going off road in search of the perfect trail. That’s why you should get one that has bigger, more durable tires.  A 15” tire is the best option.
