Vinyl windows are proving to be more and more popular among homeowners because of their efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to aluminum or wood counterparts. If you switched to vinyl windows, you’re likely interested in preserving your investment. Here are a few do’s and don’ts of maintaining your windows to retain their appearance and functionality for many years to come.

Do:

Use a gentle cleaning solution.

windowsUse a cleaner that is specifically formulated for windows. If you prefer to create your own solution, mix mild soap and water or water and vinegar. Stay away from cleaners with harsh chemicals that could damage the vinyl material, such as bleach. To apply the cleaner, use a soft, non-abrasive cloth like microfiber to avoid scratching and scraping.

Lubricate the tracks and rollers regularly.

After cleaning the tracks and rollers with a mild cleaner, lubricate them with window silicone spray available at hardware stores. Doing so allows you to operate the windows without exerting too much force, avoiding damage. Annual lubrication is recommended to ensure the metal components continue to function properly.

Don’t:

Let dirt and debris build up on the sill.

Window sills collect dirt and debris over time, including dust, bird droppings, and cobwebs. To avoid build-up, vacuum the track or use a small brush to sweep away debris before washing with a cleaning solution.

Clean windows during the hottest time of the day.

Early afternoon is the worst time to clean your windows unless the sky is overcast. That is because temperatures are hottest outdoors at that time of day, which can cause your cleaning solution to evaporate rapidly, leaving behind hard-to-remove streaks on the glass pane. As such, it’s better to clean early in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are more favorable.
