Spray foam insulation is popular in all types of buildings because of its efficiency, low cost, and easy installation. It comes in many varieties, each with its own benefits and purpose. If you’re planning to install insulation as part of a home improvement or construction project, familiarize yourself with the different options so you can choose the type that best suits your project.

Guide to Spray Foam Insulation Options

1. Closed Cell Spray Foam

All types of insulation fall under two categories: open cell and closed cell. Closed cell insulation is recommended because it’s a more rigid kind of insulation which provides a higher R-value. This means it is more effective at blocking heat and noise transfer. It also more effectively blocks moisture and air, since it expands more slowly. Because closed cell insulation is twice as effective as open cell insulation, you can use half the amount of this kind of insulation when dealing with thin walls.

2. Insulating Foam Sealant

3. SPF

SPF comes in high-, medium-, and low-density varieties. High-density SPF weighs three pounds per cubic foot and is best for exterior or roofing applications. Medium-density SPF weighs two pounds per cubic foot and is often used for interior wall cavities or unvented attics. Low-density SPF weighs half a pound per cubic foot and is also used for interior wall cavities. Low-density spray insulation is an air barrier, but it doesn’t stop vapor or moisture.
