Many businesses rely on commercial ice machines to do everything from cooling drinks and producing frozen treats to making cold compresses and keeping perishables fresh. For your ice maker to work as efficiently as possible, it should conserve, not waste water, which is what happens when it springs a leak. If you notice your unit dripping, take these steps to address the situation.

3 Steps to Take If Your Commercial Ice Machine Leaks

1. Find the Source of the Leak

First, pinpoint where the leak is coming from, whether inside or outside the machine. Step carefully around any puddles to avoid electrocution. If you find the leak outside the machine—for example, coming from the connecting water line—call a plumber. If water is dripping from inside the unit, causes might include loose or broken pipes or water pumps, faulty valve seals, and leaking condensate drains. These require a commercial ice machine technician’s expertise.

2. Turn off the Machine & Water

Don’t reverse the order of these steps because cutting off the water may damage the ice maker. If you can’t go without ice, put down a bucket to collect the drips.

3. Clean up the Water

Don’t leave a puddle around your ice machine, which can be a slipping hazard for you and your employees. Mop up the water while being careful not to step in it. Using rubber gloves, unplug and remove any electronics nearby as well. If the ice machine is in a public area, you may also want to put up a “Caution: Wet Floor” sign until a repairman arrives.
