Like other funeral arrangement decisions, selecting a cremation urn isn’t always easy. There are a large variety of options, but a few simple questions can help you narrow your selection down. Here are a few to ask when deciding.

What Size Do You Need?

Cremation urns generally come in four sizes: Adult, Medium, Keepsake, and Extra Large. Medium is often used when the ashes are being divided amongst family members. Keepsake urns can store smaller amounts of ashes to be kept in remembrance; they are typically displayed. Extra Large is often required if your loved one was over six feet tall. Other dimensions, such as the width, will depend on where you plan on displaying the urn. If it will sit in a columbarium, call and find out what dimensions the cemetery or funeral home recommends. Often the niches in columbariums can be quite small.

What Material Should You Use?

cremation urnWhere the cremation urn will sit should make a big difference when choosing the material. If it will be buried, purchase a biodegradable option. If you plan on displaying it during the memorial service, there are many decorative types available, from ceramic and brass to multi-colored glass. If you will be traveling with the urn, avoid problems at security by choosing a material that can be X-rayed easily, such as wood or marble.

Do You Want the Urn Personalized?

Many urns can be engraved with a name or phrase to memorialize the deceased. You can even have a picture or artwork put onto it. If the material you choose cannot be engraved easily, urn pendants are available. These are small metal pieces that can be engraved and then placed on the urn itself.
