The weather is hard on your car, so it's important to perform annual auto maintenance to make sure your vehicle is up for another year of use. This will help extend your car's life and cut down on the need for expensive repairs later by catching problems early. Here are a few steps to follow to take care of your car.

How to Maintain Your Vehicle

1. Rinse Off the Mud

Winter roads are notorious for muddy slush that gets kicked up by your wheels and sticks to the car. The mud is also full of road salt, which can eat through your car's components and encourage rust. At a minimum, give the whole car a rinse, including the undercarriage; however, a thorough wash and a new coat of wax will further protect it.

2. Check the Tires

You should check your tire pressure at least once a month, but pay special attention as the seasons change since the temperature difference can affect tire pressure. Also, check the tread depth; if it's less than one-sixteenth of an inch, you need new tires.

3. Inspect Your Wiper Blades

auto maintenanceIce can tear up the rubber of your wiper blades, making them less effective at wiping water off of your windshield. Check for damage, and if the blades are torn or worn down, replace them; you'll need them for the spring and summer rain.

4. Check Fluids

Check your oil to make sure there's enough of it and it's not too old. If the oil is dark and dirty, schedule an oil change, along with any other necessary professional auto maintenance. Also, top off the radiator, transmission, power steering, and brake fluids.

5. Change the Air Filter

Air filters need to be replaced about every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. A clean filter allows your engine to run more efficiently and will also help keep pollen out of your engine and your car's interior.
