A critical part of garage door maintenance is a good cleaning procedure. Especially during the spring and summer when pollen and insect counts are high and rainstorms kick up debris, giving your garage doors a good washing will keep your property looking great for longer. Below are a few do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Use a mild detergent.

Mild detergent, such as car or dish soap, is best. Mix with warm water, and thoroughly rinse with clean water. Avoid tough solvents and cleaners that contain harsh chemicals.

Clean behind weatherstripping.

Weatherstripping, or the insulating seal around your garage doors, can gather grime. Make sure part of your garage door maintenance includes wiping down this area with an all-purpose cleaner. You can also inspect it for any cracks that may be making your doors inefficient.

Wash twice a year.

If you leave grime on your garage doors, their surface layer will begin to degrade, leading to a need for garage door repair and replacement. Twice a year, give your doors a cleaning. Many homeowners find that spring and fall are the best times as temperatures are moderate.

Don’t:

Use abrasive cloths.

Pressure wash.

Pressure washers produce too harsh of a stream for your doors, which can lead to damage. A regular rinse down with a garden hose is all you need to purge grime and grit.
