Sushi and sashimi are frequently used interchangeably. While these Japanese dishes have some similarities, they aren’t the same. By learning the difference between the two, you’ll know what to order the next time you visit a Japanese restaurant.

Sushi

This dish consists of prepared rice that’s seasoned with vinegar, sugar and salt. It can include several different ingredients, such as seafood, vegetables, or occasionally fruit. A common misconception about sushi is that it has to include fish. However, fish isn’t a necessary component of this dish, and it can include avocado, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, and other ingredients instead. The dish is frequently served with a wasabi and soy dipping sauce for added flavor.

Sushi contains protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals and is low in fat. If you include seafood in the dish, you’ll get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for brain health. Sushi is considered to be Japanese cuisine, but it has made its way around the world and today is popular in many countries. There are many different types of sushi available to suit many tastes.

Sashimi

sushiSashimi is thinly sliced, raw fish that’s often served over a bed of daikon(radish) with a few shiso leaves. This dish never includes any rice, allowing the fresh fish to shine. While tuna and salmon are the most popular fishes for sashimi, many other types of seafood can be used, including mackerel, octopus, shrimp, and squid. The quality of sashimi is in the freshness of the fish, the way it is sliced and presented. Sashimi is often eaten with wasabi and soy sauce and sometimes accompanied with pickled ginger.
