From regular grooming to checkups at the vet, keeping your feline happy and healthy is a top priority. Cats’ playful nature, independence, and small, manageable size make them the second most popular pet in the United States after freshwater fish. But they haven’t always been domesticated, household animals. Next time you meet up with fellow cat lovers, share the facts below.

What You Should Know About the History of Cats as Pets

Cats Were First Used for Pest Control

Cats were first domesticated in the Near East 12,000 years ago. It was around this time the agriculture industry began to grow in the region. Cats’ keen senses and ability to hunt rodents made them desirable to ancient farmers. After harvesting grain, they would let cats loose where the crops were stored to keep pests away.

Ancient Egyptians Worshiped a Cat-Like Goddess

The Ancient Egyptian goddess of warfare, Bastet, bore a striking similarity to a cat. Although the feline goddess was revered everywhere in Egypt, the northern city of Bubastis was the main area of worship. Cat sculptures are some of the artifacts found at the site, and a cemetery to honor the animals was located just outside of the city.

Cats Were Outdoor Pets Until Recently

Churchville-New-York-groomingAlthough many people like to curl up with their cats on the couch, the animals were mainly outdoor pets until the 20th century. In the 1940s, cat litter became popular, adding to the ease of housing the animals inside. Today, there are numerous pet supplies available to entertain and protect felines, as well as professional grooming, boarding, and sitting services.
