With warmer weather finally here, many families are taking advantage of the season by using their gas grills. These devices offer fast, easy-to-control outdoor cooking for amateurs and chefs alike. Maintain these appliances to ensure they’re safe to use for years to come. If you notice any of the following signs of a gas leak, call for a professional inspection or part replacement right away.

4 Signs of Gas Grill Leaks

1. Hose Cracks

Gas grills feature fuel lines that hook up the propane or other gas to the device. Always inspect these lines before lighting the grill to ensure they’re smooth and unblemished. Cracks or holes can cause a dangerous leak.

2. Troublesome Valves

Both ends of the gas line should contain a valve — one from the fuel to the line and the other from the line to the grill. When you get the grill out for the first time, mix dish soap and water and apply the mixture to the valve where it meets the gas tank. Slowly turn on the gas and watch for bubbling. If you spot bubbles, a gas leak is occurring, and it may be time for a new container or valve.

3. Regulator Issues

Many homes today feature grills that are plumbed directly into the house and use natural gas. These devices feature a regulator that may experience a leak from a clogged vent hole. Turn the gas off before removing the O-ring with a vent hole in the middle; blow into the hole to clean it out. Then, place it back on the hose and try the gas again. Use the soap trick here, too.

4. Corroded Gas Containergas grill

Over time, many gas containers require replacement because of corrosion. Constant water exposure from being kept outside is often the culprit that causes rust, exposing the tank to leaks. Replace gas containers every few years or if you spot dents, holes, or rust buildup. These may mean the vessel is no longer adequately sealed.
