Home birth is a more intimate experience than having your baby in a hospital. Still, you'll need to have the proper supplies to ensure a safe and comfortable delivery. Midwives recommend collecting the items below before your delivery.

What Do I Need to Prepare for a Home birth?

1. Birthing Kit

Birthing kits contain all of the medical supplies you would normally find in a hospital. This includes plastic sheets for your bed, sterile gloves, digital thermometer, lubricating jelly, scrub brushes, and sponges. It’s important that you leave supplies in their airtight bags to ensure they remain sterile until the delivery.

2. Clothing for You & the Baby

After the home birth, you’ll want to have plenty of soft, comfortable clothing for you and the baby. A robe, comfortable undergarments that don’t fit too tightly, and warm blankets are essential. For your baby, make sure you have onesies, mittens, and booties.

3. Diapers

Diapers are sized by weight, with an average newborn weighing about 10 pounds. Keep in mind that your baby will grow rapidly, so you may want to buy diapers in various sizes for the first few weeks.

4. Pillows & Bedding

You’ll also want ample pillows for back support. Having additional blankets on hand is also ideal for providing extra warmth.

5. Healthy Food

Nutrition is crucial at this stage, especially if you plan on breastfeeding. Make sure you have easy-to-prepare foods that offer a lot of protein, such as peanut butter, yogurt, and cheese. In terms of beverages, juice is a beneficial option, as are drinks that replenish electrolytes.
