Enrollment in a preschool program is the first step in your child’s academic career. Through educational play, your youngster will strengthen their fine motor and social skills as well as their cognitive reasoning. Interacting with your little one at home will also aid their emotional and social development, which is why you should ask them about school each day. If your youngster won’t open up, below are a few tips to get them to talk.

How to Get Your Preschooler to Talk About Their Day

1. Use Class Projects as Conversation Starters

Many kids enjoy painting and drawing pictures in preschool. When you display their artwork at home, ask specific questions about each piece. Your little one will be eager to mention what they depicted in each picture, what they used to create the drawings, and why they chose the specific subject matter.

2. Ask Teachers About the Curriculum

preschool programsBeing an engaged parent will make it easier to discuss school with your preschooler at home. To get an idea of what types of questions to ask, find out about the preschool program curriculum from teachers. You can schedule a time each week to meet and discuss what the class is learning about, such as shapes and colors, plant life, letters, and different animals. At A Rising Star Children’s Center parents receive a daily e-mail informing them about the the lesson  for the day, providing insight into the classroom activities. This way you can then base your questions on what your children are learning and the theme of the week.

3. Keep Questions Open-End

Stay away from closed-ended questions, such as, “Did you have a good day at school?” They might only answer “yes” or “no.” To get your little one to elaborate, rephrase questions so they are open-ended. For example, when trying to start a longer conversation, ask questions such as, “What were your three favorite things about the school day?” or “What did the teacher talk about today?”
