When you have depression, it can seem like everything is out of your control. Symptoms may make you feel isolated, or drive you to pull away from your support network. If you’re facing this mental health issue, there are some steps you can take to try to manage your symptoms. To help you practice self-care during this difficult time, here are some ways to cope with this condition.

4 Ways to Manage Your Depression

1. Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol is a depressant. That means it acts as a sedative on the brain and can exacerbate symptoms like fatigue and anxiety. It also decreases your levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, which help regulate mood. Additionally, it tends to encourage unhealthy habits like eating junk food or reckless driving. Staying sober can give you back control over your routine and schedule, improving your rest and quality of life.

2. Care for Your Body

depressionEating foods dense in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and nuts, can improve your mood and minimize the effects of depression. Establishing a regular exercise routine will also reduce your stress levels. Most people with depression have irregular sleep schedules, which can exacerbate symptoms like mood swings. Prevent this by getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night, which will help you feel refreshed in the morning and ready to face another day.

3. Call Friends & Family

When you are experiencing depression, you may feel isolated. However, whether or not you see it, other people want to help. Talk to your friends and family about your feelings. Even if these conversations don’t make your symptoms disappear, they may make you feel less alone, which will provide comfort.

4. Visit a Counselor

A counselor or therapist can help you identify behaviors and factors that may be feeding your depression. They can also provide an outside perspective to your situation and help you create strategies that encourage healthy habits. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, speak to a therapist or visit a suicide support center immediately.
