You may have lush garden beds, outdoor entertainment space, and a thriving vegetable garden, but no landscaping is complete without a water garden. In addition to creating a boost in curb appeal, water features are a unique way to make your home stand out on the block. To introduce the sweet sounds of a bubbling fountain or a splashing waterfall to your property, learn from the following guide about water garden possibilities and maintenance needs.

Water Feature Options

There is a water garden feature to suit every landscape. If your landscaping lacks a focal point, consider installing a waterfall. This dynamic installation will provide eye-catching movement with its running water. Large river stones can introduce a pop of color and a splashing current. Or, if you prefer something more serene, a pond is an excellent choice. You can introduce native plants and water lilies to create a tranquil water garden,  or add frogs, catfish, and bluegill to create a unique ecosystem.

For a real show-stopper, you can’t go wrong with a fountain. This water feature comes in a wide variety of aesthetics, shapes, and sizes. Whether you prefer a minimalist metal fountain or a tall, baroque installation, there is a fountain for every taste.

Water Garden Maintenance

water gardenThe type of water feature you select will determine its maintenance needs. Waterfalls are run by a concealed pump that requires periodic maintenance. Debris can clog this pump, and natural materials like fallen leaves can introduce the conditions for algae to thrive in artificial waterfalls. Additionally, garden waterfalls are prone to losing water from evaporation. To keep a waterfall in peak condition, regularly remove any debris from the installation and top off its water levels. You can discourage algae growth with algaecides and using a stiff brush to scrub algae from the waterfall’s rocks as it forms.

Ponds require similar maintenance. In addition to controlling algae growth and regularly removing any debris from the water, aquatic life benefits from regular maintenance. Aquatic plants are an excellent addition to a pond — they aerate the water for animal life and are a potential food source for certain species. Additionally, ponds require their water levels to be maintained like garden waterfalls during dry periods.

Fountains require the least maintenance. Other than periodic wipe downs, fountains need occasional water refills, and a dose of algaecide to keep their water lines clear and unclogged. If your fountain can be moved, bring it in during the winter to avoid damage. Leftover moisture can freeze in the lines, expand, and cause leaks.
