4 Ways to Prepare Your Child for Preschool, Rochester, New York

Going to preschool is a big change for children and their families. Spending hours away from home and being around new faces can be a struggle for even the most outgoing kids. However, there are many steps you can take to prepare your little one for their prekindergarten journey.

4 Tips for Getting Your Child Ready for Preschool

1. Let Your Child Know What to Expect

If your little one knows what to expect from preschool, they may be less nervous about going. Before they head off to school, tell them what activities they’ll be doing and who will be in class with them. It may be helpful to tour the school in advance and have your child meet their teacher.

2. Help Your Child Socialize

If your child isn’t used to interacting with others, it’s best to plan social activities before preschool begins. Set up play dates with friends and neighbors with little kids. This way, your little one will learn how to socialize, communicate, and share with others.

3. Read to Them

preschoolIn preschool, the teacher will likely read to the children at least once a day. That is why it’s beneficial to start reading to your kid at least once a day. It will help them get used to this ritual, improve their patience and focus, and build their vocabulary.

4. Encourage Self-Help Skills

When your child goes to prekindergarten, they won’t have you around to help them do everything. It’s wise to teach your little one basic self-help skills so they can perform simple tasks on their own. Let them practice feeding and cleaning up after themselves at home. Teach them how to put on and tie their shoes. If ties are too complex at this stage, try slip-on varieties or VELCRO® straps that are easy for them to don. Ideally, your little one will be potty-trained before they start preschool.
