If you’ve always wanted a new boat and are finally coming close to achieving your dream, it’s critical to take your role as the owner and operator seriously. This includes not letting someone unqualified take it for a spin. In the state of Nebraska, there are strict rules in place that determine who is eligible for operating watercraft, which are explained in the guide below.

3 Groups Who Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Operate Your New Boat

1. Anyone Under the Age of 14

It is illegal for any children under the age of 14 to operate a vessel. Additionally, anyone operating a boat under the age of 16 will not be permitted to tow passengers. When stocking your new boat with supplies, keep in mind you must also have Coast Guard-approved life preservers for all passengers under the age of 13. It is the responsibility of the operator to ensure these are worn at all times unless hunting waterfowl while anchored.

2. Individuals Without Certification

Therefore, in addition to making sure you have the proper qualifications, verify that any guests you have along who might be interested in steering it bring their documentation as well.

3. People Under the Influence

When planning a day out on the water with friends, it’s natural to stock up on some beer or wine for guest. But just as you wouldn’t operate a car while under the influence, you should never allow anyone to drive your boat after drinking, either. Nebraska law prohibits the operation of a motorboat by anyone with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater.
