Getting a driver’s license is a significant milestone. It signifies responsibility, independence, and autonomy. It’s also essential for obtaining gainful employment and access to education and other services. Unfortunately, mistakes can happen, some of which can result in getting your license revoked. While you can get it reinstated, there is a cost, which for many people is yet another barrier. The good news is if you’re an Ohio resident who has had their license revoked, you may be eligible to take part in the state’s new amnesty program.

What Is the Program?

The Ohio Driver’s License Reinstatement Fee Amnesty Initiative, a six-month pilot program, began January 31 and continues through July 31. Its goal is to reinstate licenses for people who have had theirs suspended for 25 specific offenses.

drivers licenseIt is not available to people whose offenses involved alcohol, drug abuse, or a deadly weapon. Some examples of eligible offenses include operating a vehicle without proof of insurance, juvenile delinquency or truancy, failure to pay child support, or failure to stop for a school bus or after an accident.

How Can You Take Advantage of It?

More than one million state residents have had their license suspended, and one-third of those will be eligible to have them reinstated under the bill. Applicants must complete all other court-ordered sanctions and have had their license suspended for at least 18 months. Indigent people can have their reinstatement fees waived, and others can have them reduced under the initiative.

Previously, some people could arrange to make payment plans to have their licenses reinstated, but this required hiring an attorney to go to court, which many citizens could not afford. To apply, complete Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ amnesty application form #2829. You can obtain a form from the local Deputy Registrar or online.
