Age spots are small, flat, dark discolorations on the skin. Also called liver spots or sun spots, they’re typically brown but can also be gray or black. They primarily affect people over the age of 50 as a natural part of the aging process or from prolonged sun exposure. Below is an introduction to this common condition, as well as some possibilities for age spot treatment.

An Introduction to Age Spots

Causes

Excess production of the skin pigment melanin leads to the development of age spots. Ultraviolet light also speeds up melanin production, so frequent or unprotected time in the sun can contribute to age spots as well. When the melanin is produced at such accelerated levels, it bunches together in high concentrations, taking the form of these small spots on the skin's surface.

Prevention

age spot treatmentIn some cases, age spots are simply a byproduct of growing older. But to minimize risk, take extra care and caution when out in the sun. Wear sunscreen with a minimum of a 30 SPF rating. Safeguard the delicate skin around the eyes by wearing sunglasses with at least 99% UVA and UVB protection. A broad-brimmed hat is also helpful for shielding the face from the sun. Aim to limit your time outdoors, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun is shining intensely.

Treatment

Age spot treatments range from bleaching medications to skin care procedures. Bleaching medications are topical ointments prescribed by a doctor. They cause the discolorations to fade over time. Skin care solutions for age spot treatment can be fast-acting and provide more noticeable results. Chemical face peels and microdermabrasion procedures remove the outermost layer of the skin, revealing new, smooth skin. Phototherapy, or light therapy, uses a high-powered wavelength of light to break up melanin clusters and clear up age spots.
