If you’ve suffered a chip, fracture, or recently received root canal therapy, your dentist likely provided a dental crown. This is one of the most popular cosmetic solutions, and it’s important you properly care for it. Following essential rules will ensure your crown lasts as long as possible, so keep the following in mind.

Do:

Brush and floss.

Dental crowns aren’t invincible. They can still host decay-causing bacteria and be worn down by acids, which is why you need to brush and floss around it. Plaque can build up at the base and eventually work its way below the gum line, leading to gingivitis and then gum disease. Brush all surfaces of the crown and floss between the adjacent teeth.

Watch what you eat.

dentistCertain foods may break crowns or loosen them. Avoid chewing gum, caramel, taffy, and sticky candies, popcorn or foods with hard seeds, and raw vegetables. Chewing ice is also problematic. Instead, steam vegetables and soften other foods that pose a risk. This will significantly cut down on the likelihood of costly damage.

Don’t:

Dismiss side effects.

Whether you experience side effects right after the crown is applied or weeks later, let your dentist know. Swelling, pain, fever, and gum inflammation can all be signs of deeper issues. Call your dentist office so you can schedule an exam. They’ll look for any problems and adjust aftercare as needed.

Use your teeth as a tool.

Your dental crown isn’t a tool. Never use it to open bottles, plastic food bags, containers, or other items. You may accidentally damage or pull it loose in the process. Worse, you may damage surrounding teeth and require additional crowns or root canal therapy.
