Braces are ideal for correcting issues with crowded or crooked teeth. However, if you wear an orthodontic device, dentists will caution you to avoid certain foods while treatment is ongoing. This is to ensure optimum dental health, while also preventing serious issues with the braces themselves.

What Foods Should Kids With Braces Avoid?

1. Hard Foods

Nuts, hard pretzels, and apples are tough to eat with braces. While fruits and vegetables can be cut into more manageable sizes, other items should be avoided. Biting down into something hard can break wires on front teeth if your child isn’t careful.

2. Gum & Other Sticky Treats

3. Acidic Drinks

Soda contains acids as well as sugars. The acids in these beverages weaken enamel, which makes it more susceptible to decay. Drinking beverages with a high acid content sometimes results in the formation of white spots on teeth. Additionally, the acidity can weaken the bond on your braces.

4. Ice Cubes

Having ice in your drinks is perfectly fine, provided your kid doesn’t have a habit of chewing it. Chewing on ice damages orthodontic devices, which may result in a costly trip to the dentist.

5. Popcorn

While popcorn can be a healthy treat, it poses a problem for people with braces. The hull of the popcorn can easily get stuck under metal wires and is usually very hard to remove. Even with regular flossing, it’s best to avoid popcorn until your braces are removed.
