Your sinuses are a system of hollow cavities located in different parts of the skull, including the lower forehead and between the eyes. The largest are the maxillary sinuses in the cheekbones on either side of the nose. A sinus lift addresses this area, adding bone to your upper jaw. Your dentist may recommend this procedure to support subsequent dental implants. Find out why below.

Why Do You Need a Sinus Lift?

Dental implants are a cutting-edge solution to tooth loss. To install them, your dentist first screws a tiny titanium post into your jaw. This serves as an anchor or a sort of fake root for a crown. Since the implant is fused to your jaw, it’s both sturdy and long-lasting.

dental implantsSome people don’t have sufficient jawbone to support an implant. This can be because of advanced age or prior tooth loss. Normally the jaw is subject to regular pressure from chewing but when a tooth is gone, this disappears and the underlying bone deteriorates.

How Is the Procedure Done?

With a sinus lift, new bone is added between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses. The sinus membrane is shifted up and replacement bone material is placed underneath. There should then be sufficient bone mass and density to support dental implants.

The bone used in the sinus lift may be taken from your own body, like the hip or the bone beneath the knee. Alternatively, bone can be taken from a donor, or a cow bone can even be used. If your own bone is used, another surgery will be needed before the lift to harvest this material.
