Your vehicle’s brakes are one of the most important safety features. When you press on the pedal, your car or truck should come to a stop smoothly and surely. Typically, mechanics typically recommend brake service every 10,000 miles to keep the system in top condition. However, if you notice any of the following five issues, you may need service sooner.

5 Signs Your Truck Needs Brake Service

1. Brake Light On

Your vehicle’s dashboard has lights that signal when something’s wrong with the oil, engine, or brakes. Typically, these are yellow or red. If you notice the brake light is on, it’s because your vehicle’s electronic system has sensed an issue. In this case, take your car or truck to a mechanic.

2. Pulling to One Side

trucksWhen you come to a stop if the car feels as though it’s pulling to one side of the road or the brakes seem to grab when you push the pedal, it may indicate brake issues, such as a stuck caliper, collapsed brake hose, or uneven brake pads. All of these issues put pressure on the wheels, causing the car to veer toward the spot with the most pressure.

3. Vibrating When Braking

If your car vibrates when you push the pedal or the steering wheel shakes, it may indicate warped rotors. Uneven rotors thrum against the brake pads, which is what accounts for the vibrations you feel when you press the pedal. Have this addressed by a mechanic as soon as possible, as it can affect your car or truck’s safety.

4. Pedal Goes Too Far Down

When you press on the brake pedals, the vehicle should come to a stop with the pedal about one to three inches off the floorboard. If you have to press down until the pedal touches the mat, or the pedal feels soft when you apply pressure, schedule brake service immediately. It may be the result of low or contaminated brake fluid or worn pads. Another possibility is an issue with the master cylinder or air or moisture in the brake lines.

5. Grinding Sounds

Odd noises are one of the most obvious warning signs something’s not right with your vehicle. If you hear high-pitched sounds (such as grinding or squealing) when braking, steel is rubbing against the rotor. This indicates the brake pad has worn out. Address this as soon as possible. Otherwise, the pad and rotor will both need to be replaced.
