If your tires are worn and you haven’t had an auto mechanic change them in a few years, you could be putting yourself at risk. Cracks, blisters, and other tire issues can lead to blowouts and accidents. However, by paying attention and regularly checking your tire performance, you can stay safe and keep your car damage-free. Here are a few sign’s it’s time to replace or fix your tires.

How to Tell If You Should Replace or Repair Your Tires

1. The Tire Warning Light Turns On

If you have a relatively new vehicle (a 2008 model or later), you likely have a system that can detect low tire pressure. If you ever notice a light on the dashboard that looks like an exclamation point surrounded by a “U,” you should immediately head to a gas station and check the pressure on your wheels using a gauge. If any of the tires are low, fill them up to the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) found in the owner’s manual.

 2. Uneven Wear on the Tire Tread

auto mechanicAs you’re inspecting the rubber, make sure all the tires have the same amount of wear and tear. If the front tires seem barer than the back ones, or vice versa, they may be misaligned or have low pressure. Additionally, the rotation may be off. To avoid this issue, have an auto mechanic rotate them at least once every half a year.

3. Cracks on the Tires

As your tires age, the rubber will naturally break and crack. Additionally, harsh conditions and long road trips will cause them to degrade further. However, even if the tires are rarely used, there will still be some cracking. To keep the tires in good shape, manufacturers make them with various waxes and antiozonants, materials that protect them against oxygen and heat. Unfortunately, these protectants will not work as well if the car isn’t used regularly. If you don’t normally use your vehicle, go for a short drive at least once a week.
