If you recently joined a gym for the first time, you're probably excited about getting fit. These facilities offer an array of machines and classes that can help you manage your weight, boost your endurance, and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. You should also be aware that proper etiquette is a must at the gym to ensure other guests have the same positive experience you do. Follow the do’s and don’ts below for a smoother time at the gym.

Do:

Wipe down machines after use.

It’s natural to work up a sweat at the gym. However, leaving a piece of equipment covered in sweat is likely to irritate other gym-goers. Wipe down the equipment with a towel or wet wipes before the next person uses it. 

Wear the right clothing.

GymVirtually all gyms have a dress code to preserve the equipment and to ensure everyone feels comfortable while they work out. Ask a staff member about the dress code if you’re unsure. In general, workout gear such as leggings, shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, and sneakers are acceptable. Also, steer clear of clothing that is too revealing, such as tops with holes in them and shorts that don’t fully cover the backside, or else staff members may ask you to change. 

Don’t:

Have loud conversations on your phone. 

Some people get into a mental groove when working out. As a result, a loud cell phone conversation can throw their concentration off. If you must talk on the phone, do so in a private area or away from the gym floor. If the matter is not urgent, consider returning the call when you’re finished. It’s also wise to set your phone on silent before getting started. 

Take your time on a machine. 

While you definitely shouldn’t rush your workout routine, also be respectful of other members. If you plan on taking some time on a particular piece of equipment, consider breaking it up into sessions. That way, you can get a full workout without hogging a machine.
