The moving process is never a small feat, but relocating to a new state or across the country takes even more preparation. Luckily, by following a few simple steps, you can make the most of this new chapter. Use the following three tips to master the long-distance moving process.

How to Prepare for a Long-Distance Move

1. Purge Before Packing

Long-distance moving is an incentive to cut down on the mass of your belongings — especially if you’re being charged by weight or truck size. To make the move easier and less expensive, start to sort through your possessions a couple of months before the big day, separating them into take, sell, throw away, and donate categories.

2. Pack Carefully

To prepare them for the jostling journey ahead, invest in high-quality moving boxes, made of thick cardboard, as well as strong packing tape. Tape both the seams of box panels and across the top and bottom, forming a cross-shape with the strips. When packing plates, stack them vertically (on their side) to prevent breakage. To keep wine and water glasses intact, pick up a few boxes from your local liquor store, which will contain partitions that prevent cups from hitting each other. For your most breakable items, use bubble wrap and tissue paper. Keep in mind that newspaper print can rub off on some items over long trips, so avoid this material if possible.

3. Save Time When Unpacking

After a long trip, you’ll be excited to settle into everyday life in your new place. To ensure you can relax immediately, pack a separate box of essentials that you can take into the house first. This should include pajamas, medications, toiletries, and bedding. You can also cut down on move-in time by leaving your dresser filled with clothes and taping the drawers in place for the move. Additionally, keep your closet clothes on hangers in wardrobe boxes.
